MYO Global, a trailblazing organization committed to shaping a better future for the youth, proudly announces the launch of its inaugural initiative, the ‘Pad the Girl’ project. The event took place at Dodowa Presby School on May 26, 2023, marking a significant milestone in the organization’s vision to empower young girls and promote menstrual hygiene in Ghana.
The ‘Pad the Girl’ project aims to make menstruation a normal fact of life by 2030 and promote hygiene by ensuring that sanitary pads are accessible to every Ghanaian girl. One of the central objectives is to tackle period poverty, a pressing issue that affects countless young girls who lack the resources to purchase sanitary products.
During a heartfelt interview conducted with girls at the school ahead of the event, a disturbing reality surfaced. Due to financial constraints, many of them resort to using makeshift solutions like socks, tissue paper, or pieces of cloth during their menstruation. This poignant revelation served as a driving force for MYO Global to take immediate action and launch the ‘Pad The Girl’ project.
Gracing the event was Hajia Nazifatu Shiraz, Health Promotion Officer at the Ga East Municipal Assembly, who provided invaluable insights on menstrual hygiene. The young students actively participated in practical demonstrations, further deepening their understanding of the subject.
Hajia Shiraz also shed light on the Ghana Health Service’s “Girl Iron Folic Tablet Supplement” project (GIFT), an initiative that supplies iron folic supplements to young Ghanaian girls. This project aligns with MYO Global’s vision to ensure the holistic well-being of young girls during their menstrual cycles.
Aarona Owusu, the passionate Project Lead of ‘Pad the Girl,’ emphasized the significance of normalizing menstruation by 2030. The initiative seeks to empower girls, ensuring they can navigate their menstrual journey with confidence and comfort, free from intimidation and mockery.
MYO Global’s impactful donation of sanitary pads, generously sponsored by Cocoa Processing Company (CPC), Strategic Mobilization Limited (SML), Goldridge Holdings, and benevolent individuals, has already made a transformative difference in the lives of girls at Dodowa Presby School. Students and school authorities expressed their heartfelt appreciation for the support, and the School Health Education Programme Coordinator (SHEP) highlighted the urgent need to renovate school washrooms to promote hygiene standards and create a supportive environment for girls.
In a testament to MYO Global’s unwavering commitment to this cause, the organization has adopted the school and will supply sanitary pads to the girls every month. However, to sustain and expand this meaningful initiative, MYO Global appeals to the public to join hands in supporting the ‘Pad The Girl’ project through donations, either in cash or in-kind contributions.
Together, we can end period poverty and provide girls in Ghana with the necessary resources they need to manage their periods with freedom and dignity.
